Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi to be renamed Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium

In a major development, the popular Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium is all set to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium. The development comes days after former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was also the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the president of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), passed away on Saturday. The process of renaming the stadium will take place on September 12, at a function where a stand at the Kotla will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.

Confirming the news, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said, “It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”

The DDCA also confirmed the news from their official Twitter account. The function, to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, will be graced by the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

The DDCA also confirmed the news from their official Twitter account. The function, to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, will be graced by the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

The DDCA, however, clarified that while the stadium has been named after Jaitley, the ground will still be called as Feroz Shah Kotla.

On Monday, Gambhir had renamed the Yamuna Sports Complex after the former BCCI vice president. “May he remain in our hearts forever. As a mark of respect to our beloved leader, I hereby propose to rename  “Yamuna Sports Complex” as “Arun Jaitley Sports Complex” #RiPJaitleySir,” Gambhir tweeted.

During his tenure as the DDCA president, Jaitley is credited to have transformed the Kotla stadium by renovating it with modern facilities. Soon after Jaitley’s demise, several cricketers, including Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, took to Twitter to pay rich tributes.RELATED

Sehwag recalled how under Jaitley’s tenure at the DDCA, several Delhi cricketers got the opportunity to represent India at the biggest stage. “Pained at the passing away of #ArunJaitley ji. Apart from having served greatly in public life , he played a huge role in many players from Delhi getting an opportunity to represent India. There was a time when not many players from Delhi got a chance at the highest level. But under his leadership at the DDCA, many players including me got a chance to represent India. He listened to needs of the players & was a problem solver. Personally shared a very beautiful relationship with him. My thoughts & prayers are with his family & loved ones. Om Shanti,” the Nawab of Nazafgarh wrote on Twitter.

On the other hand, Kohli will become the third Indian player after Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohinder Amarnath to have a stand named after him at the Delhi stadium.
