Sonia Gandhi asks Congress-ruled states to pass legislation to bypass Centre’s farm laws

The political heat over the controversial farm laws passed in the recently concluded monsoon session of Parliament is set to intensify, with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday advising the party-ruled states to explore the possibility of passing laws in their respective legislatures to negate the three laws.

Gandhi has advised Congress-ruled states to explore the possibility of passing laws under Article 254(2) of the Constitution to nullify the farm laws, especially since they “encroach” upon the state’s jurisdiction.

“This would enable the states to bypass the unacceptable anti-farmers’ provisions in the three draconian agricultural laws, including the abolition of MSP and disruption of APMCs, in Congress-ruled states,” said AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal.

Gandhi’s advisory to the Congress-ruled states comes on a day when the state units of the party held protests against the farm laws and handed over memoranda against the contentious laws to the governors of the respective states.

Upping the ante on the controversial laws, Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said his government will petition the Supreme Court against the laws. The Punjab CM said this as he participated in a sit-in protest at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

Meanwhile, Congress MP in the Lok Sabha, T.N. Prathapan moved the Supreme Court against the farm laws, with his petition stating that the laws would be disastrous for farmers and will lead to their exploitation by opening a parallel market. The petition filed by the MP from Kerala’s Thrissur is the first petition to be filed in the apex court challenging the legal validity of the farm laws.
