Coast Guard launches helicopter squadron in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: In a major step towards enhancing maritime security and conducting search and rescue operations, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) officially launched Squadron 830 on Sunday, launching the new Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) MK-III here.

ICG Director General VS Pathania commissioned an official ceremony at the ICG Air Enclave Squadron to cover the vast coast of Odisha-West Bengal.

A total of 16 ALH MK-III helicopters were deployed at ICG. Twelve are already with squadrons, four of which are based in Bubaneswar to cover the entire West Bengal-Odisha coast and beyond. They will enhance ICG’s maritime capabilities, Patania said.

As part of the Make in India initiative, the ALH MK-III helicopter was developed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bengaluru. The helicopter is equipped with the latest sensors and the latest radar/electro-optical surveillance equipment for maritime long-range reconnaissance.

The helicopter is equipped with a Shakti engine, glass cockpit, high-intensity searchlight, collision warning and avoidance system, advanced communication system, automatic Homer identification, search and rescue system and automatic flight control system. They are also equipped with heavy machine guns for maritime police operations and portable intensive care units (MICUs) to facilitate the transfer of critically ill patients during medical evacuations.

The 830th Squadron at ICG Air Enclave in Bhubaneswar was launched on 17 June 2021. Since then it has flown more than 1,200 hours and has carried out various operational missions such as medical evacuation, Operational Helicopter Restriction (SHOL), helicopter landing tests in Odisha and West Bengal region , among others.

Squadron 830 (CG) is led by Commander Anurup Singh. Served by 11 officers and 46 employees. The four helicopters are based in Bubaneswar as part of the Odisha Coast Guard Headquarters Task Force and Kolkata Coast Guard Area (North East).
